What is double cleansing? Like washing your face twice back to back?

i double cleansed during quarantine, but stopped 2-ish years ago. no real reason other then less space in my bathroom vanity, and wasn't sure if it was making a difference for me personally or not.

Sometimes when I do something sweaty and all that, I definitely go for double, but mostly just once to avoid sort of dryness
